On September 19, at 10:00 am the grand opening of the 13th Southern Tournament in Mathematics took place at the All Russian Children Center “Orlyonok”.

Among the people who greeted the participants were Daud Mamiy (Director of the Tournament, deputy head of the Caucasus Mathematical Center, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Adyghe State University, director of the Regional School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics) and Lev Emelyanov (head of the jury for the tournament, senior lecturer of the department of higher mathematics at Kaluga campus of Moscow State Technical University, member of the jury for the Russian Olympiad in mathematics for secondary school children). They wished the participants to perform well in the tournament, achieve high results, enjoy mathematics, and meet new friends.

Seventeen jury members were introduced to the participants. Among the jury members, there are jury and members of the methods committee for the Russian Olympiad in mathematics, coaches of the national team in mathematics, specialists from the leading research and education centers.
The participants of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, members of the musical band “Street Magic,” dance group “Yalkyn”, and choreography group “Orlyata” took part in the opening ceremony as well.

Thus, the 2018 Southern Tournament in Mathematics has officially begun. About 200 school children from Grades 7-11 from 30 regions of Russia compete in their knowledge of math and their logical skills. They compete in teams made of six or seven people. The tournament consists of four leagues: start league, junior league, premier league, and grand league. Which league the team is competing in depends on the age of the participants and the results of the team Olympiad that took place on the first day. The tournament consists of five rounds during which the participants solve problems and compete in math battles. The first three rounds show who the semi-finalists are. The fourth round is for the semi-finalists and the teams competing for the third place. The final round determines the winners for each league.
The tournament will end on September 25 with the closing ceremony where the winners and participants of the tournament will be awarded diplomas and prizes.
