Celebrating Young Female Mathematicians at ASU’s III South-Russian Olympiad ‘Assara

News | 16 October 2024

The III South-Russian Mathematical Olympiad “Assara” for girls has commenced at Adyghe State University. This year, 60 schoolgirls from 21 regions of Russia are participating.

Additionally, representatives from Abkhazia will also showcase their mathematical skills. Adygea is represented by a delegation of 10 participants.

-We are not the first to host a mathematics Olympiad specifically for girls. The inaugural event took place in China, followed by competitions in Europe. However, these events primarily focus on intellectual challenges in mathematics. Our goal was to create an Olympiad with a unique atmosphere that would engage girls in a multifaceted experience. With this distinct approach, it stands as the first and only of its kind in the world. This year, the Olympiad has broadened its reach, extending beyond the southern regions of Russia. Today, we welcome girls from areas outside the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts. I wish you all a wonderful time in Maikop, in Adygea, and hope you enjoy yourselves,- said Daud Mamiy, rector of ASU, at the opening.

According to him, the concept of “Assara” is designed to demonstrate to girls that the Olympiad, mathematics, and science can serve as a means of social mobility—a path to a fulfilling and harmonious life. The participants were welcomed by the Minister of Education and Science of Adygea, Evgeny Lebedev, and Kirill Sukhov, one of the Olympiad’s initiators and the head coach of the Russian national mathematics team.

-I would like to extend my greetings to all the participants. Indeed, while the Olympiad is not unique in its inception, it is genuinely one-of-a-kind within the territory of the Russian Federation. This event is not merely a competition; it is also a wonderful opportunity to explore the subject, our customs, and the beauty of our region. To everyone, I would like to say, “Welcome to Adygea,”- said Evgeny Lebedev.

This year’s Olympiad is scheduled to take place from October 11 to 15. The girls will compete in two rounds across two age groups: the junior league for 8th-grade students and the senior league for 9th and 10th-grade students. In each round, participants will be presented with four problems. Each round in the junior league will last 3.5 astronomical hours, while the senior league rounds will last 4 astronomical hours.

In addition to math classes and task analysis, a cultural program and events aimed at the development and broadening of horizons have been organized for the girls. This includes an interactive excursion to the Pushkin People’s House, master classes in decorative and applied arts, and a lecture-training session by Katerina Zabaznova, head of the Olympiad training center “MatFormat,” on “Effective Communications.” Additionally, the girls will have the opportunity to meet and engage with esteemed professionals such as Nurzhan Yemykov, a senior research fellow at the T. Kerashev ARIGI; Aliy Khatkov, an honored worker of tourism in Adygea; Susana Dautova, an honored artist of Adygea; and writer Leyla Kurashinova. They will also gain invaluable insights from Ilhama Amirali, a professor at Duzce University in Turkey; Olga Tsukanova, head of the academic partnerships department at Sberbank; and Gayane Panina, a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and professor at St. Petersburg University.

The Olympiad is organized by the Caucasian Mathematical Center of Adyghe State University, the Republican School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Polaris Educational Center. Its goal is to popularize Olympiad mathematics, foster greater interest in the subject among girls, and strengthen the friendly connections among female students in the southern regions of Russia who share a passion for mathematics.
