The 20th Southern Mathematical Tournament Kicks Off at Orlyonok

News | 23 September 2025

The tournament will be held from September 20th to 28th as part of the All-Russian “Young Mathematician” session, organized by Adyghe State University at the Orlyonok All-Russian Children’s Center. A total of 190 schoolchildren from 39 regions across Russia are participating in this anniversary tournament.

The Southern Mathematical Tournament is organized by the Caucasian Mathematical Center of Adyghe State University, the Republican School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the All-Russian Children’s Center “Orlyonok”.

This year, 30 teams are participating in the tournament, comprising both combined teams made up of schoolchildren from various regions across the country and regional teams. The regional teams include students from Adygea, Bashkortostan, Buryatia, Mordovia, Tatarstan, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Dagestan, Kalmykia, Udmurtia, Chuvashia, the Donetsk People’s Republic, as well as the Altai, Kamchatka, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Stavropol Krais, Bryansk, Vologda, Volgograd, Irkutsk, Lipetsk, Kaliningrad, Kirov, Kurgan, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov, Samara, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen, Penza, Pskov, Tula, Ulyanovsk, Chelyabinsk, Yaroslavl Regions, as well as Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The competition is organized into four leagues. The Starter League consists of teams of students in grades 7 and 8. The Junior League includes teams of students in grade 9. The Premier League and Grand League are composed of teams of students in grades 10 and 11. Teams are divided into these leagues based on their performance in preliminary team competitions, with the strongest advancing to the Grand League.

The Southern Mathematical Tournament is conducted in the format of team math battles. Each round features 15 battles: teams are paired and compete to solve unique mathematical problems. The jury, comprising renowned mathematics educators, professors from leading Russian universities, coaches of the Russian national mathematics team, and members of the jury for the All-Russian School Mathematics Olympiad, evaluates not only the correctness of solutions but also the contestants’ ability to explain and justify their answers, as well as their skill in verifying the solutions of the opposing team. A team earns two points for winning a math battle and one point for a draw. After four days of competition, the strongest teams advance to the tournament finals.

In addition to the competitive component, the tournament program features a variety of cultural, recreational, sports, and popular science events. Renowned scientists and mathematics communicators will deliver lectures. Among them is Andrey Raigorodsky, a researcher at the Caucasus Mathematical Center and Director of the Phystech School of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at MIPT. Lectures will also be presented by tournament jury members and Elena Bezglasnaya, PhD in Economics and Associate Professor in the Department of Economic Theory at Samara State University of Economics.

Friendly volleyball and football tournaments will be organized, involving school teams and judges.

The winners of the Southern Mathematical Tournament will be announced on September 27, when the jury concludes the final round and announces the results.
